My roster pasted as one long name
Each swimmer needs to be on their own line.
The Add athletes box reads one swimmer per line. If the names were copied as one row, they all land in a single name.
Fix it
Delete the long-name athlete.
In your spreadsheet, put the names (and emails) in a column, one swimmer per row.
Copy the column and paste it into Add athletes again.
